In addition to the direct economic benefits generated by Harrison County’s military installations, the region also benefits in other ways:

Valuable Source of Labor

The 20,000+ members of the military and their dependents are valuable additions to the Gulf Coast’s labor pool. On average, approximately 3,500 military personnel transition out of the service annually and many decide to stay on the Gulf Coast due to the job opportunities, low cost of living, and recreational amenities. Due to their training, they are a highly-skilled addition to the workforce and possess a positive work ethic, which makes them a popular commodity with area employers. In addition, spouses and dependents are ideal for the region’s growing service industry.

Quality Medical Care

Harrison County is fortunate to have numerous top-notch health care facilities allied with area military installations. From the Keesler Medical Center, which is ranked as one of the Top 5 teaching hospitals in the U.S., to the wide range of medical services offered at two local VA hospitals, military personnel and retirees are able to take advantage of these state of the art facilities and technology. In addition, as these professionals transition out of the military, existing residents are able to take advantage of their expertise.

Community Volunteers

From the Seabees who help build/repair homes and help out after natural disasters, such as hurricanes, to the airmen at Keesler who annually host the Mississippi State Special Olympics, area charities and non-profit organizations benefit from the countless volunteer hours military personnel give back to Harrison County and the Gulf Coast region. Active duty members and military retirees regularly volunteer in area schools, community clean-ups, and causes like the Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, March of Dimes, and American Heart Association. In addition, they are also active members in the business community, serving on boards of area Chambers of Commerce and civic groups.
